Absolutely the best hangover cure, everyone thinks they have perfected the best Bloody Mary recipe. From the Snapper family of cocktails, the basic mix is spirit, tomato juice, Tabasco and Worcestershire sauce. This mix has been modified time and again by modern bartenders to include all manner of different ingredients to create new experiences. Horseradish, wasabi, celery salt, herbs, sherry, Guinness and port are all used to alter its flavour. Some bartenders have even substituted tomato juice for clamato juice, beef consommé, passata or bouillon.

The archetypal savoury cocktail, the Bloody Mary is a brunch classic and the ultimate hangover cure, but that doesn’t mean its reserved for mornings.
This tomato based tipple is great at any time of day for those who want some rich savoury umami flavours in their drink. If you’re planning a wintery bar hire or an afternoon event the Bloody Mary could be a great addition to your menu.
Everyone has their own preference for a Bloody Mary and these drinks are highly customisable, whether you like it spicy, tangy salty or strong we’re happy to cater to your favourite recipe. Bloody Mary’s traditionally use vodka but don’t feel limited to this spirit, the Bloody Mary is part of the ‘snapper’ family of cocktails and the vodka can be replaced with pretty much any spirit of your choosing.

The Bloody Mary isn’t confined to the morning but it is the perfect brunch cocktail, if you’re planning an event in the daytime or you want to design your menu around other afternoon favourites this drink would go great alongside Mimosas or Breakfast Martinis—a zingy mixture of gin, triple sec, lemon and marmalade.
The Bloody Mary also works brilliantly without the booze as a Virgin Mary (or a Bloody Shame), so this drink is a great option to cater to non-drinking guests.

The Bloody Mary has so many varying stories of its creation it’s hard to pin the right one down, however a lot of historical work has been done for us.
Allegedly created at Harry’s bar in New York by a French bartender who served a 50/50 mix of vodka and tomato juice with some spice, it seems however, this was a recipe that was already being served throughout Europe. Vodka and tomato juice were both new to the American consumer at the time so it is probable that it was something of a new experience for them. It’s also said that it was created when a bartender who ran out of orange juice started mixing vodka with tomato juice instead.
We can be pretty certain, however, that the original creator of the Bloody Mary is a man named George Jessel. There’s a comprehensive history of the creation written in Difford’s Guide, which we recommended reading for the full story.
Myths & Legends
A pervasive myth is that the Bloody Mary is named after Mary 1st Queen of England.
The Tomato juice represents the blood spilled by the vicious monarch and the vodka is symbolic of her violent methods of execution.

Ingredients & Equipment
- 50ml Vodka
- 25ml Lemon Juice
- 25ml Worcestershire Sauce
- 75ml Tomato Juice
- 2 Slices of Cucumber
- Between 3 and 6 Dashes of Tabasco (according to taste)
- Spoonful of Horseradish
- Spoonful of Wholegrain Mustard
- Pinch of Celery Salt
- Sprinkle of Freshly Ground Black Pepper
- Cucumber Slice, Celery Stick and Lemon Wedge to Garnish
- Mexican Elbow
- Bar Spoon
- High-Ball Glass
- Cubed Ice
- Take your Boston glass or small tin
- Chop your cucumber into cubes and add to the bottom of the shaker
- Use your muddler to muddle the cucumber
- Using your jigger to measure, add the vodka and tomato juice to your shaker
- Using your Mexican elbow and your jigger to measure, squeeze 25ml of lemon juice and add it to your shaker
- Using your bar spoon add the horseradish and mustard to your shaker and give a quick stir
- Add the celery salt, pepper and Tabasco to your shaker
- Using both halves of your Boston shaker, pour the drink from one half to the other and repeat for around 30 seconds (this is called rolling)
- Once all the ingredients are combined, fill a high-ball glass with cubed ice
- Pour the cocktail into the iced glass
- Garnish with a celery stick, a slice of cucumber and a lemon wedge, crack some more black pepper over-top
- Serve and enjoy!
