How to make ...

Smoked Mojito

This is a smoky twist on the classic mojito. Here we take the famous mint and lime mixture and replace the classic white rum with The Cut’s uniquely delicious smoked rum. The first rum of its kind in the UK, The Cut Smoked Rum has earthy notes of coffee beans and cacao adding a new level of depth to this famously refreshing cocktail.

This is a great simple cocktail to make at home thanks to its readily available ingredients and simple method, whilst this drink does require crushed ice, this is easy to make at home by just crushing cubed ice in a bag or a clean tea-towel.

Method

Using a jigger to measure, add your rum, lime juice and sugar syrup to a high ball/collins glass
Pick and slap 8-10 mint leaves and place in glass with other ingredients
Fill to around ⅔ with crushed ice
Churn using your bar spoon for 10-15 seconds
Top with a pile of crushed ice
Garnish with a mint sprig
Serve and enjoy

Equipment

Jigger/Measure
Bar Spoon
Crushed Ice

History

Like so many classic cocktails, the origins of the mojito are shrouded in rumour and mystery, with creation stories varying from Cuban bars frequented by Ernest Hemingway to pirate ships and Francis Drake himself. No matter where it really originated, the mojito has cemented its place in the cocktail canon as one of the most famous and most popular rum drinks around.

There are loads of twists and spins on this drink, from topping with champagne to make a royal mojito to adding fresh fruit, purees and even alternative herbs instead of the classic mint. This version follows the classic formula of rum, mint, lime and sugar but simply replaces the usual white rum with a smoked rum courtesy of Cut. The smoky flavour of this rum adds new levels of depth and complexity to this classically clean and refreshing cocktail.

Howdy, folks. Sasa here from TT Liquor. Today we’re making a classic. It’s a Mojito, but this time we’re using a smoky rum. And for this, we teamed up with our friends from Cut. So this is going to be quite something special. A little bit unusual, but I hope you enjoy it. Over to you Kay.

All right, guys. It’s Kay back here at TT Liquor. Today, I’m going to be showing you how to make a really nice version of a very classic rum cocktail. We are going to be making a Smoked Mojito.

So I’ve got some mint leaves here, I’d say we want a little handful of mint leaves, maybe 8 to 10 mint leaves. There we go, little bit of a slap and a rub between my hands and then we’ll chuck them in the bottom of the glass.

Next thing going in the glass is going to be our booze, which is this lovely Cut, smoked rum. It’s got a nice kind of light, smoky flavour to it. And we want 50ml of our rum.

Next thing going in here is going to be some fresh lime juice. I’ve got some pre-squeezed here. And we want one shot or 25ml of our lime juice.

We want about kind of 15-20ml of our simple syrup, depending how sweet we like our Mojito. I like mine quite sweet. So I’m going to do 20ml of my simple syrup.

So I’m going to fill the glass maybe about three quarters of the way with crushed ice to start with. There we go, and I’m going to grab my bar spoon and give that a nice mix in the glass.

Beautiful. And now to finish off, I’m just going to give it a nice top of crushed ice.

And for a garnish, I’ve just got a nice mint sprig that I’ll pop in there.

And that is our Smoked Mojito ready to drink.
