Frankenstein Zombie

Frankenstein Zombie

The Frankenstein Zombie comes from the twisted minds of our very own mad scientists. As if this tiki drink wasn’t wild enough already, our monstrous green spin on the classic is an unholy marriage between a Zombie and a Long Island Iced Tea. Mixing vodka, gin, rum and Midori with lemon juice and sugar gives us a surprisingly delicious and devilishly deceptive tiki drink.

Vodka, Gin, White Rum, Midori, Lemon Juice, Sugar Syrup – High-Ball*.

The Frankenstein Zombie is a big green cocktail guaranteed to inject some fun in to any bar hire.

This tiki inspired cocktail mixes vodka, gin, white rum and Midori, a unique, Japanese, melon flavoured liqueur with a distinctive, bright green colour. Together the strong dry spirits, the sweet fruity liqueur and the tangy fresh lemon juice work to create a drink that tastes far more complex and refined than it looks.

Tiki drinks are all about fun and this family of cocktails tend to be brightly coloured, tropically flavoured and far from shy with their alcohol content. The Frankenstein Zombie, like so many tiki drinks, has a considerable kick, if you’re planning a tiki based menu it might be worth featuring some longer, lower ABV options to sit alongside the heady tiki cocktails. Some great light tiki options include the Buena Vida; a surprisingly sophisticated mix of tequila, grapefruit, pineapple and soda, sure to quench thirsts at a hot summer event, or the Sloppy Joe, which despite its name is a gorgeously refined Martini-style tiki drink featuring rum, white vermouth, triple sec, lime and grenadine, combined carefully to create a cocktail that rivals French-Italian amaro drinks in terms of depth and complexity.

The Frankenstein Zombie is a fun favourite but it certainly packs enough balance and flavour to earn its stripes as a legitimate cocktail too. For those who are particular fans of Midori, there are a few other drinks that feature this unique melon liqueur: The Japanese Slipper, is a sour style drink that combines Midori with triple sec and lemon juice making a tart and fruity low ABV sour.

If you’re eager to serve a Frankenstein Zombie at your bar hire and want to know more about what drinks could sit well alongside it, be sure to speak to your event organiser about your options or check out some other rum-based, fruity and tiki-style cocktails from our list.

This drink found its way onto our list after a customer who was particularly fond of this Japanese melon liqueur requested that we work it into a tiki menu, we liked it so much it stuck. Our head bartender and events manager, Jake Rogers had this to say about the Frankenstein Zombie:

“The Frankenstein Zombie is a bit of a break from the norm in terms of tiki cocktails, almost more akin to a Long Island Iced Tea than a traditional Zombie, but with the added east-asian flavour of Midori. And with its strength it’s not one for the faint hearted.”

Myths & Legends

It’s thought the original Zombie was created by Donn Beachcomber for a customer who was hungover and needed something to revive him for an important business meeting. Ever the prankster, Donn made the man a drink with 8 shots of rum, cleverly disguised under a blanket of tropical juice.

Legend has it the man proceeded to drink three of these before leaving for his meeting, only to return to Donn’s bar a few days later to inform the bartender that the drink he’d been served had got him so drunk he’d been fired from his job and was turned into a complete zombie, hence the name.

We can’t find any references for the Frankenstein Zombie, it appears to be a drink unique to Mixology Events, we couldn’t even find any other drinks with the same name.

The name is inspired by the eerie green hue of the cocktail and its rather unconventional recipe which conjures images of mad scientists mixing magic formulas and is of course taken from Mary Shelley’s classic 1818 Gothic novel, Frankenstein.

Ingredients & Equipment

Midori is one of those unique products that is synonymous with its brand, there are other melon liqueurs available but none are as distinctive or widely used as this variety produced by Suntory. Midori is the japanese word for green and this liqueur is practically luminous in its bright hue, the sweet fruity flavour is akin to the outside of a Twister ice-lolly and when paired with sharp sour flavours produces a deliciously citrusy and fruity combination.
