Sex On The Beach

This infamous 90’s cocktail may conjure images of watered down drinks in package-holiday hotels, but when made properly, the Sex On The Beach is a balanced and delicious vodka drink. A long fruity mixture of vodka, peach schnapps, orange and cranberry juice, this is a summer classic and a firm favourite with guests of all kinds.

The Sex on the Beach may be seen as a little passé these days but this symbol of the 90’s is a steadfast classic for a reason, the citrusy orange and the dry cranberry balance perfectly and the hint of floral sweetness from the peach schnapps brings this drink to life.

As with many vodka drinks, the spirit itself doesn’t add much to the taste here but it helps cut through some of the sweetness of the fruit juice and round out the cocktail. This is an excellent choice for those planning a summertime mobile bar hire or a tiki based cocktail menu.

The Sex on the Beach may not be a rum cocktail but it possesses all the traits of a classic tiki drink, long fruity, colourful and deceptively mild in flavour, this is a great way to offset a rum-heavy tiki menu and provide some variety to those guests less enamoured by the standard tiki spirit. This is a fairly simple cocktail to produce, leaving room for some more elaborate cocktails on your menu, a great choice for those planning on featuring complex tiki cocktails like the Zombie or the Hurricane.

If you’re planning on serving The Sex on the Beach as part of a vodka-based menu, and are looking to explore the Soviet spirit and everything it has to offer, there’s a wide and varied range of cocktails that could be served alongside the Sex on the Beach. A classic Vodka Martini is a great way to taste the clean, dry flavors of this liquor and a great way to drink high-quality vodkas, it can be served dry or wet, with a lemon twist or an olive to garnish and with added olive brine to make it a dirty Martini if desired.

For any non-drinking guests not wanting to miss out on the fun, tropical, tiki-style cocktails work great as mocktails as well. With the vodka removed and the peach schnapps replaced with peach puree or syrup, the Sex on the Beach becomes a Safe Sex on the Beach or a Virgins on the Beach, whichever name you prefer this is a fun, balanced, alcohol free cocktail and a great alternative for those steering clear of the booze.

If you’re interested in including the Sex on the Beach as part of your menu and want to know more about cocktails might work well alongside it, make sure to speak to your event organiser about your options, or check out some other vodka based, summery and tiki-style drinks from our list.

This infamous vodka drink dates back to the early 1980’s and it;s first published appearance seems to be in the American Bartenders School Drink and Spirits Guide from 1982.

Myths & Legends

The now-non-existent website of the presumably, now-defunct drinks company of the same name,, is widely quoted as attributing this cocktail and its name to an American bartender simply known as ‘Ted’.

They claimed that Ted invented the drink while working at a bar called Confetti’s in Florida. With peach schnapps having just been introduced to the US market, the story goes that a distributor offered a bonus to the bartender who sold the most, and so Ted, “mixed up a peach schnapps, vodka, orange juice and grenadine cocktail. When Ted began to sell the drink, he was asked what it was called. On the spot, Ted thought what the main reason was that people came to Florida for their Spring break—it was The Beach and Sex.” However, Ted apparently invented the drink in 1987 and website, mental floss, proved this story to most likely be false when they found the aforementioned recipe, dated 1982.
