Drinks don’t get much more classic than a Gin & Tonic.

You’d be forgiven for thinking this isn’t a cocktail, but in fact this drink is listed in various cocktail books including, David A. Embury’s The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks and Difford’s Guide. Whether or not you think of it as a cocktail there’s no denying the quality and perfection of this simple combination.

This drink is perfect for anyone wanting to provide some simple sophistication at their mobile bar hire or for those designing a gin based menu that will appeal to everyone. With so few ingredients, it may not seem like there’s much room for manoeuvre with a G ‘n’ T but the flavour of your Gin & Tonic can change drastically depending on the gin used, the tonic used and even the garnish.

If you’re featuring a G ‘n’ T as part of a gin based menu and want some more exciting drinks to go with it some other great gin classics include the Bramble; a summery mixture of gin lemon and blackberries or the Corpse Reviver No.2; a complex combination of gin, vermouth orange liqueur and lemon juice.

History

The Gin & Tonic owes its existence to the East India Trading Company.

In the 1700’s quinine, the bitter ingredient in tonic, was recognised to help prevent malaria. Soldiers who were given the medicine didn’t like the taste so mixed it with their gin ration and a bit of sugar to sweeten it. Now, researchers have proven that the amount of quinine you’d need to consume in the form of tonic to be an effective malaria treatment is far more than you’d ever be able to drink.

Some estimate that you’d need to drink 67 litres of Gin & Tonic a day to receive a dose of malaria treatment, in doses this large, quinine has an alarming list of side-effects. However, tonic today contains far less quinine than it used to, with some tonics not containing any at all and those that do, containing only just enough to give the drink its distinct bitter taste, so don’t be put off.

In the early 1700’s, gin was responsible for a huge amount of social discord in the capital. 7000 gin shops, not counting the illegal ones, sold over 10 million gallons of the spirit. Poverty was widespread and gin provided a respite from the day to day hardship of London’s poorest people. During the period doctors estimated that the spirit caused an 8th of all deaths among adults.

The discovery of the medicinal benefits of quinine is elaborated on in this example from the gin foundry:

“The most common tales of its discovery begins in 17th Century Peru when Spanish colonists discovered a treatment for Malaria in the bark of the Quinquina tree. One account insists that the fateful encounter was the result of the wife of the Spanish Viceroy in Peru, the Countess of Chinchon, falling ill with Malaria. The Quechua (Inca) peoples had long understood the Cinchona tree’s ability to stop shivers in cold temperatures.

Legend has it that in a show of generosity, the native Incas instructed her to drink a potion containing the ground bark of the indigenous “Quinquina” tree, which grew on the slopes of the Andes. The potion worked and she quickly recovered. The colonists took the bark to Spain around 1640 and its medicinal reputation was quickly established.”

Ingredients & Equipment

This is where you can win over the people who say a Gin & Tonic is too bitter. As the tonic makes up 2/3rds of the total drink a good one is essential. Most of the hatred towards the Gin & Tonic comes from a poor tonic, not a bad gin. Fever tree is a natural tonic with no artificial sweeteners. It’ll win over the haters.

London dry gin is a great style, try Jensen’s or Broker’s. Floral, more perfumed gins like Bloom could also help prove the Gin & Tonic’s credentials. Any gin can be used in a gin and tonic and different gins will change the flavour drastically, some of our favourites are Monkey 47; a German gin made of 47 botanicals, and Silent Pool; a British gin produced in Surrey.

  • 50ml Gin of Your Choice
  • Tonic Water
  • Garnish

 

Equipment

  • Jigger/Measure
  • High-Ball Glass or Gin Goblet
  • Cubed Ice
Method
  • Take your glass
  • Using your jigger to measure, add the gin to the glass
  • Fill your glass with cubed ice
  • Fill the glass with a tonic water of your choosing
  • Garnish with a garnish of your choice, lemon or lime works great, or you can try and match the botanicals in your gin, anything from citrus peel to peppercorns, from juniper berries to fresh herbs can be used to garnish your drink and elevate the flavour of your cocktail
  • Serve and enjoy!
